Chewy Reports Tuesday With 27% Already Gone. The 10% Move Is Just the Beginning.

Chewy reports fiscal second-quarter results before the open on Wednesday, September 9, and the options market has drawn a clean line in the sand: a roughly 10% move in either direction, on a stock that has already surrendered about 27% this year. That combination makes CHWY the clearest defined-risk earnings trade on the calendar this week.

Why This Trade Stands Out

The surface-level story is an online pet retailer stumbling through a soft consumer backdrop. The actual trade is more specific. Chewy shares could move approximately 10% when the company reports its quarterly results on Sept. 9, based on options data compiled by Bloomberg and reported by Investing.com. But the history behind that 10% number deserves attention before anyone buys premium. In the last eight earnings cycles, actual price movement exceeded the implied move on two occasions, with shares falling 11.0% in September 2025 against an implied 9.3%, and dropping 14.4% in June 2025 against an implied 9.5%. The market has been underpriced on the downside before.

The Story Behind the Trade

The case for owning calls into this report is a credible one, but it is not free of tension. Chewy cut its full-year outlook back in June. The company lowered full-year fiscal 2026 net sales guidance to $13.40 to $13.55 billion, citing a more challenged consumer environment and trade-down behavior.

The macro conditions since that guidance cut have not improved. AAA data, cited by Axios and AAA’s Northeast blog, showed the national average price for regular gasoline stayed above $4 for all of August, and the national average was $4.08 on Aug. 31. A year earlier it was about $3.18. Gasoline is a direct tax on the exact customers Chewy serves: suburban pet owners who already automated their purchases to save a trip to PetSmart.

And then Lululemon happened. Lululemon reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 results showing revenue down 4%, comparable sales down 9%, and Americas net revenue down 8% for the quarter ended Aug. 2, 2026. Chewy does not sell $130 leggings. It sells dog food on autopilot. But both are symptoms of the same deteriorating wallet. If the most loyal consumers in retail have started saying no to Lululemon, the question heading into September 9 is whether they are also silently renegotiating their Autoship commitments.

Technical and Fundamental Alignment

There is a structural bull case buried inside the damage. In Q1 fiscal 2026, Autoship accounted for 84.4% of total net sales, the company added nearly 200,000 net customers, and the active customer base reached 21.5 million with net sales per active customer rising to $597. Recurring revenue at that scale is not nothing. Net sales grew 7.7% year over year to $3.36 billion in Q1, with net income up 51.9% and adjusted EBITDA rising to a 7.5% margin, while free cash flow improved 45% to $70.8 million.

Consensus is set at $0.36 EPS on $3.32 billion of revenue for the quarter, according to Zacks. That EPS figure would mark a 9.09% rise compared to the same quarter of the prior year. The stock around $24 trades at a forward valuation that looks discounted versus many retail and internet peers. Whether that discount is an opportunity or a warning depends entirely on what management says about the second half.

Options Perspective

The preferred structure here is a bull call spread using the September 11 weekly expiration, targeting the upside scenario where Chewy beats on revenue quality and lifts guidance. Buying the 25 strike call and selling the 28 strike call keeps max loss defined to the net debit, limits exposure to elevated pre-earnings implied volatility, and targets a move that still fits within the options-implied range. If results disappoint or guidance contracts further, the position loses only premium paid, nothing more.

Risk Management

Offsetting near-term positives are macro-driven pressures: softer consumer spending that is muting premiumization and attach rates, the downward revision to fiscal 2026 net sales guidance, and some margin headwinds from fuel surcharges. Clear risks remain if Autoship growth slows, or if new vet clinics and ad products do not gain the traction analysts currently assume. Size accordingly.

The Beast Verdict

Chewy into September 9 offers the clearest binary catalyst on the board this week. The stock has already been punished. The options market is pricing a 10% swing it has underestimated before. And the macro context, record August gas prices combined with a sharp Lululemon reset, means guidance language will carry as much weight as the EPS number itself. A defined-risk call spread keeps the loss finite while the upside, if Autoship holds and management steadies the outlook, is real. Watch the revenue quality and net sales per active customer on the call. Those two figures will tell you more than the headline beat or miss.
