Okta’s Quarter Earned the Multiple. Now Prove AI Agents

August 27, 2026

Q2 FY27 beat on revenue, earnings and cRPO. The question today is whether the valuation reset is justified by fundamentals or borrowed from a future that has not arrived yet.

Opening

OKTA closed Wednesday’s regular session at $134.42 and traded to roughly $160.86 after hours. That 19% gap demands a rigorous accounting, not a celebration.

The beat was real. The multiple expansion was real. What the market will spend the next quarter resolving is whether the agentic-AI identity opportunity that management called “very early” can convert from a compelling investor pitch into bookings that show up in cRPO.

Company Profile

Okta is the leading independent identity platform, securing human, machine, and AI agent access across enterprise and customer-facing applications. Its workforce and customer identity products serve organizations that need a neutral layer between their users and their technology stacks. That neutrality is the competitive moat: unlike Microsoft (MSFT), Okta does not compete with customers’ core software. CrowdStrike (CRWD) and CyberArk (CYBR) each push into identity from adjacent positions, but neither commands the same breadth of third-party integrations.

The Permiso acquisition, announced July 30, extends Okta beyond access management into identity threat detection and response, adding behavioral analytics and post-authentication visibility across cloud and AI environments. TechCrunch reported the deal value was just under $200 million and was structured as an almost all-cash transaction, citing a source familiar with the deal.

The Numbers

  • Revenue: $805M, +11% year-over-year vs. $795M consensus and $790-794M guidance
  • Subscription revenue: $793M, +12% year-over-year
  • GAAP net income: $116M, or $0.65 per share, versus $67M / $0.37 a year ago
  • Adjusted EPS: $1.05 vs. $0.97 expected
  • Q3 FY27 revenue guidance: $813-817M, implying 10% growth at midpoint
  • Q3 cRPO guidance: $2.590-2.600B, +11-12% year-over-year
  • Full-year FY27 revenue guidance: $3.216-3.226B, or 10-11% growth
  • Full-year non-GAAP operating margin: 26%

Why the Stock Moved

Three things drove the multiple re-rating simultaneously. First, the revenue beat cleared guidance by $11-15M, a clean result with no asterisks. Second, adjusted EPS of $1.05 came in ahead of the Street, showing operating leverage that the profitability skeptics had been slow to credit. Third, and most important for where the stock prices from here, management’s framing of agent identity as the company’s next growth surface landed at exactly the moment investors were already paying premium multiples for agentic AI infrastructure.

The critical nuance, flagged clearly by post-earnings analysis: agent products did not drive the cRPO acceleration this quarter. Better sales productivity, large-enterprise execution, and partner-sourced bookings did. The stock got credit for both the improved core and the agent optionality at the same time.

Macro Context

Okta’s quarter arrived against a backdrop of accelerating enterprise AI deployment. Okta research found that more than half of executives (58%) reported an AI-related security incident or a close call in the past year. That context explains why investors are willing to pay for optionality before agent revenue is material.

Forward Scenarios

Bull

Agent identity products begin contributing meaningfully to bookings in Q3-Q4. The Permiso integration, expected to close this quarter, gives Okta a runtime detection capability that differentiates it from both MSFT and CRWD in enterprise CISO conversations. Revenue growth re-accelerates toward 13-14%, and the stock retests pre-breach highs above $200.

Base

Core identity execution holds, cRPO grows in the 11-12% range as guided, and agent products remain an early pipeline item rather than a recognized revenue contributor through the next two quarters. The stock consolidates in the $155-175 range as targets from the analyst cohort provide a ceiling until Q3 numbers validate the thesis.

Bear

Q3 guidance at the midpoint implies 10% growth, which is below where the market just priced the stock. Any stumble on large-enterprise renewals, a delay in the Permiso close, or competitive displacement by Microsoft in mid-market accounts could reopen the gap between the multiple and fundamentals quickly. The $134 pre-earnings close becomes the floor test.

Technical Overlay

The after-hours trade around $160.86 cleared the prior 52-week high of $157, shifting the technical structure from a range-bound consolidation into a potential breakout. The open this morning is the first key test: whether that level holds as support or reverts. The 50-day moving average sits well below current price, so there is limited technical friction on the upside but also little cushion on a reversal. Watch the $155-157 zone as the first meaningful support cluster.

What Investors Should Watch

  • Permiso close confirmation and any early commentary on integration velocity
  • Q3 cRPO versus the $2.590-2.600B guide: this is the single number that will tell investors whether agent demand is entering the bookings funnel
  • Analyst target revisions today: the gap to $160+ creates immediate upward pressure on targets
  • CRWD and CYBR responses: both competitors have overlapping identity roadmaps and will face questions about Okta’s positioning at their next earnings

Bottom Line

Okta deserved a higher multiple after this quarter. The core business improved before agent products contributed a dollar of revenue, which is the right sequencing. What the 19% move has now priced in is a version of the agent story that has not fully arrived. The debate for the next 90 days is not whether Okta wins in agentic identity. It is whether Q3 cRPO gives investors something concrete to hold while they wait for it.
