Semtech’s LoRa Bet Is Paying Off. The Next Question Is Scale.

Semtech built its IoT reputation on LoRa’s low-power, long-range wireless standard. Until recently, the market treated that franchise as a slow, steady business riding utility meters and smart-building sensors. The Q2 FY2027 report ended that framing.
Analyst Targets
- Street consensus: Strong Buy, average 12-month target ~$209
- Target range: $155 on the low end to $300 on the high end
- Average target implies roughly 42% upside from recent levels near $147
The Numbers
Semtech reported record net sales of $341.9 million in Q2 FY2027, a 33% year-over-year increase, with non-GAAP diluted EPS growing 73% to $0.71. Adjusted EPS of $0.71 beat consensus of $0.61, while revenue came in roughly 4% ahead of expectations. The earnings leverage is the real signal: EPS expanding more than twice as fast as revenue means the mix shift is working.
LoRa-enabled net sales reached $58 million, marking a 58% year-over-year increase, with strong contributions from industrial and consumer applications. That growth has three distinct vectors. Traditional LoRaWAN, LoRa Plus for smart home and security, and Amazon Sidewalk scaling into Canada and Mexico, with Europe planned for 2026, are all pulling simultaneously.
The IoT market underpinning that growth is accelerating. Industry analysts project the LoRa and LoRaWAN IoT connectivity market will grow from $10.7 billion in 2025 to $44.8 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 33.1%. The LoRa Alliance has said LoRaWAN deployments have surpassed 125 million devices globally, and industry commentary has described LoRaWAN as spanning 70+ countries, reflecting a transition from niche industrial deployments to mainstream adoption across utilities, smart buildings, and consumer applications.
The Strategic Pivot That Changes the Math
Revenue growth alone does not explain why the investment case has reset. The portfolio move does. Semtech entered into a definitive agreement to sell its cellular module business to Compal Electronics for $62 million, a transaction widely seen as sharpening the company’s strategic focus on higher-margin AI data center and IoT connectivity markets. The company has guided to 63.9% gross margin ex-modules in Q3.
On the product side, Semtech is widening its wireless portfolio beyond its core LoRa transceiver line. Trident IoT struck a definitive agreement making Semtech’s LoRa Plus platform the connectivity foundation for next-generation multi-protocol smart home solutions, integrating Trident’s ELCap platform with Semtech’s LR2021 transceiver to simplify designs across Z-Wave, with plans to support Zigbee and Thread/Matter. That agreement positions Semtech as a one-stop provider rather than a single-protocol chipmaker, a meaningful shift in how device manufacturers evaluate suppliers.
Forward Scenarios
Bull: Q3 FY2027 guidance of $410 million implies 20% sequential revenue growth, and if LoRa’s three growth vectors hold, the segment could reach $80 million or more by year-end. Gross margin expansion compounds the upside.
Base: LoRa sustains mid-40% year-over-year growth through fiscal year-end. Data center carries the near-term beat. Margins expand but trail the bull case as investment continues.
Bear: Amazon Sidewalk expansion outside North America slows. Smart home protocol fragmentation stalls LoRa Plus design wins. Margin expansion gets absorbed by higher R&D spending ahead of the October 15 Analyst Day.
Bottom Line
The debate around Semtech used to center on whether its IoT franchise could grow fast enough to justify the Sierra Wireless acquisition debt load. That argument is fading as the portfolio is simplified. Semtech delivered record net sales in Q2 FY2027, and the cellular module sale removes a segment management has suggested was limiting consolidated margin potential. What investors should watch now is whether LoRa Plus can compound the device count at the same rate LoRaWAN did in industrial, and whether the October 15 Analyst Day delivers a credible multi-year revenue framework. The IoT connectivity opportunity is real and growing. The question is how much of the roughly $44.8 billion market Semtech actually captures.
