Samsung’s KRW 107.4tn Q3 Profit Beat, Stock Still Fell

Samsung Electronics (005930.KS / SSNLF) this morning reported Q3 2026 preliminary operating profit of KRW 107.4 trillion, roughly $80.3 billion at current exchange rates. The figure surpassed 100 trillion won for the first time in the company’s history, as booming demand for artificial intelligence continues to fuel its chips business. The stock closed down 2.42 percent in Seoul.

The Numbers

  • Operating profit: KRW 107.4 trillion, up 782.5% year-over-year and about 20% quarter-over-quarter, beating the LSEG SmartEstimate of KRW 106.1 trillion by about 1.2%.
  • Revenue: KRW 195 trillion, up 126.6% year-over-year.
  • Prior quarter: Q2 2026 posted record revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and record operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion, driven by its memory business.
  • Full results: Samsung will release detailed results on October 29.

Why the Stock Fell

The headline figure landed slightly below the upper end of analyst forecasts, which had ranged above 108 to 110 trillion won at some firms, leaving room for disappointment. That gap drove a classic sell-the-news response.

Beyond the earnings miss against elevated expectations, analysts had flagged October 8 as a high-volatility date, with preliminary results arriving into a busy flow calendar for semiconductors and Korea.

The won strengthened sharply during the third quarter, which can be a headwind for exporters that sell in dollars and report in won. Goldman Sachs, for example, cut its own Q3 operating profit estimate to KRW 106 trillion from KRW 112 trillion, largely citing won strength versus its prior FX assumptions.

What the Preliminary Figure Hides

Today’s release contains no division breakdown. Samsung publishes full results, including memory, foundry, and mobile, later in October. That matters because the profit concentration is not uniform.

Industry forecasts suggest the mobile and networks division could post an operating loss in the high-1 trillion won range in Q3 2026. Samsung’s HBM4 efforts have improved its positioning in the high-value memory market, and higher DRAM pricing is adding to chip-side gains, but the mobile division is likely still under pressure. The chip segment is carrying the entire enterprise.

Read-Across: SK Hynix and Micron

Samsung’s results are rekindling optimism about the second-half earnings of South Korea’s two memory chip giants. With robust AI demand continuing to drive profitability, analysts project the combined Q3 operating profit of Samsung and SK Hynix will reach around KRW 180 trillion.

SK Hynix reports in late October. Samsung fell behind SK Hynix in the HBM3E generation due to qualification delays, but the transition to HBM4 has shifted the balance. For Micron (MU), upbeat Micron earnings released last week indicated AI demand remains robust at least through September, and Micron also forecast that memory supplies will remain constrained by AI for at least the next year.

Forward Scenarios

Bull: The broader HBM supply shortage is expected by chipmakers to persist into 2027 and potentially through 2028, giving Samsung meaningful time to consolidate its recovered HBM market position. Full results on October 29 reveal a memory operating margin above 70%, confirming the chip division offsets mobile losses by a wide margin.

Base: Samsung delivers divisional detail broadly in line with current estimates. HBM4 revenue growth exceeds expectations; mobile losses stay contained below KRW 2 trillion. The stock stabilizes around KRW 265,000 to KRW 270,000 through month-end.

Bear: If Q4 guidance shows won headwinds compounding alongside mobile losses, analysts revisit 2027 forecasts. Concerns over a slowdown in AI-driven chip demand have already weighed on the sector, especially following several reports of data center delays in the United States in recent months.

Technical Overlay

Samsung closed at KRW 262,000 on October 8, down 2.42 percent from the prior session. The stock entered earnings week near KRW 272,000 and has now surrendered those gains. The KRW 260,000 zone is the next support level of consequence; a close below it on volume would signal a more sustained retracement. Resistance sits at the pre-release KRW 268,500 close.

Bottom Line

Samsung crossed KRW 100 trillion in quarterly operating profit and the market sold it. That is not a verdict on the AI memory cycle. It is a verdict on positioning. The stock had already priced a record quarter; what it had not priced was a headline profit that still came in a touch below the most aggressive broker targets. October 29 is the moment that actually matters: divisional margins, HBM4 revenue, mobile loss size, and any forward commentary on 2027 contract pricing. That is where the next directional move will be decided, not here.
